I tried the trial version, but could not get it to recognize most of what I said.
And when it did, it did not do what I told it to do.

Sorry to hear that you ran into trouble! Couple of things that may help:

Does your mic pick up a lot of background noise? If so, you might try a different external mic.
Have you tried doing the "Train your computer" option in Control Panel > Speech Recognition?
